Next.js vs WordPress: What Should You Choose?
When businesses come to us for a new website, the first technical decision is usually the platform. The two names that come up most are WordPress and Next.js. Both are excellent — but for very different situations. Here is how we advise clients to choose.
What each one actually is
WordPress is a content management system: install it, pick a theme, add plugins, and you have a site. Next.js is a modern development framework: a developer builds your site from scratch, exactly the way you need it.
Where WordPress wins
- Speed to launch: a basic site can go live in days.
- Editing: non-technical staff can update pages easily.
- Ecosystem: thousands of plugins for almost anything.
Where Next.js wins
- Performance: pages load noticeably faster, which directly helps Google rankings and conversions.
- Security: no plugin vulnerabilities to patch every week — most WordPress hacks come through outdated plugins.
- Custom features: booking flows, dashboards, calculators — anything is possible without fighting a theme.
Rule of thumb: if your website is your product or your main sales channel, invest in custom. If it is a simple brochure, WordPress is fine.
The hidden cost nobody mentions
WordPress looks cheaper upfront, but factor in premium plugin renewals, maintenance retainers, and the occasional hacked-site cleanup. Over three years, total cost of ownership often ends up similar — with the custom site being faster and more reliable throughout.
Our honest recommendation
Choose WordPress for a content-heavy site with a tight deadline and frequent editorial changes. Choose Next.js when speed, security, and custom functionality matter — an e-commerce store, a platform, or a site you expect to grow with your business.
